Foot and Mouth Disease

Foot and Mouth Disease can spread quickly and place immense pressure on both animals and farmers. When FMD is suspected or confirmed, fast action and consistent daily care can make a real difference to comfort, recovery support, and limiting spread within the herd.

Quantum.Silver® for Animals is used on farms as a supportive option for managing infection pressure during outbreaks, alongside good biosecurity and veterinary guidance.

What is FMD?

What Is Foot And Mouth Disease?

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals. It can cause painful mouth and foot lesions, drooling, reduced appetite, lameness, and a drop in milk production. Outbreaks are stressful, fast-moving, and require calm, structured farm management.

Common Signs Of FMD

Common Signs of FMD

Farmers often notice symptoms such as mouth sores, excessive drooling, foot tenderness or limping, reduced feed intake, and animals appearing uncomfortable or reluctant to move. In dairy herds, reduced milk production is also common, often with a high incidence of mastitis.

If FMD is suspected, strict hygiene and veterinary guidance are essential.

How To Use Quantum.Silver® For Animals

Quantum.Silver® for Animals is used on farms as a broad-support antimicrobial option to help manage infection pressure during viral challenges, bacterial infections, fungal issues, and coccidial infections.

It may be used both as a preventative measure and as a treatment during an outbreak.

Available Product Forms

To make farm use practical, Quantum.Silver® for Animals is available in multiple formats - making it easy to support both the herd and the individual animal when needed.

Core Farm Formats (Most Commonly Used):

QS Premix

Mixed into feed for group support and mass treatment.

QS Liquid Solution

Given orally for individual dosing support.

QS Gel

Applied directly to lesions, wounds, or irritated areas for topical support.

This combination allows you to support animals internally (via feed or oral dosing) and externally (via topical gel application).

Optional Extras (Support Products for Specific Needs)

Animal Eye / Ear Drops

For irritated eyes and ears across many species.

Intramammary Injections (12ml)

Targeted udder support in dairy animals for mastitis treatment.

Piglet Doser

Added support for piglets during digestive or microbial challenges.

A Practical FMD Support Approach on the Farm

With FMD, the priority is to reduce spread and support animals early, rather than waiting for the entire herd to show signs. A structured approach includes consistent daily support for the full recommended period, supporting high-risk animals that have been in close contact, and maintaining strict hygiene with limited movement where possible. Topical care can also help protect and soothe painful lesions, especially around the mouth and teats.

Practical Feed / Lick Mixing Ratios (Farmer Reference)

When QS Premix is mixed into feed or lick, the amount added per ton must be adjusted according to how much feed/lick each animal typically consumes per day. Animals eating less feed/lick require a stronger mix per ton, and animals eating more feed/lick require a weaker mix per ton.

Best Practice Fo FMD

Best Practices During FMD Outbreaks

Even with supportive products, the biggest difference during FMD comes from strong farm management and daily consistency.

  • Keep sick animals separate where possible.

  • Disinfect equipment and handling areas.

  • Limit visitors and unnecessary animal movement.

  • Ensure access to clean water and soft feed.

  • Monitor appetite, drooling, temperature, lameness, and lesions daily.

FMD is a serious disease and should always be managed with professional guidance and responsible farm protocols.
